As many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe ON His name.  -John 1:12

That’s the promise I pulled from my box today.

I want you to look at the wording.  It says, ” …to them that believe ON His name…”

There is a difference in believing in something, and believing on something.  My dad, who most of you know, was a preacher for over 40 years.  He used to give an illustration in one of his messages regarding this very subject.  It goes like this…

“You can believe in something…but it will do you no good until you believe on it!  The Bible says in James 2:19, ‘You believe that there is one God. That’s good! The demons also believe that, and they tremble with fear.’   But that belief and fear for them is not going to do them any good.  You must believe ON the Lord Jesus Christ in order to be saved!

That reminds me of a story I once heard.  An uneducated fellow came from the back woods, and went to see his cousin in New York City.  He was overwhelmed by the sky scrapers he saw!  The cousin had a meeting in the Empire State Building, and took his back woods relative with him.  He tried to persuade him to get on the elevator and go to the top to have a look around, but all the coaxing in the world could not convince him. Old ‘back woods’, would have nothing to do with it.  Instead, he sat in the lobby all day long and watched the folks get on the elevator.  They’d get on, go up or down, and then get off.  He knew it worked…he saw it with his own eyes.  But he wouldn’t trust it enough for himself to get ON and try it out.  So, it did him no good.  He was on the ground floor, and would stay there until he decided to trust the elevator to work for him.

The same holds true with Salvation.  You can believe in God.  You can look around and see everything He has created, and know that He exists.  You can even see what He’s done for others…how their lives have changed….  You can believe in Him….  But until you TRUST Him with your soul, your heart, your life….  Until you believe ON Him…that belief will do you no good.  You can’t make it to heaven until you believe ON Him.  In Acts 16:31 it says this, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved…”  -M. B. Schuessler

I urge you….  If you don’t KNOW Him….  Call ON Him today!  Believe ON Him today!  And, you will be saved!

  1. You are so right, Anita. Anything else is a legalistic approach and it handicaps God’s church, I think. Believing on his Name is all that is required. To that degree it makes us all part of God’s grand church. Thank you for your post.
