“The Holy Spirit: Pt. 2. Filled with the Spirit” sermon notes by Pastor Danny Leavitt

2 Corinthians 3:17   (KJV)

Liberty

Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

I have examined all religions, and the result is that the Bible is the best book in the world.

  • John Adams in a letter to Thomas Jefferson

Three Prayer Requests

  1. the peaceful and glorious reign of our Divine Redeemer may be known and enjoyed throughout the whole family of mankind.

  1. pray that we may with one heart and voice humbly implore His gracious and free pardon through Jesus Christ, supplicating His Divine aid and above all to cause the religion of Jesus Christ, in its true spirit, to spread far and wide till the whole earth shall be filled with His glory. (Isaiah 2:3)

  1. Pray with true contrition of heart to confess their sins to God and implore forgiveness through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ our Savior.

Genesis 1:1-2

The Holy Spirit was involved in creation.

1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

The Song of Moses

Deuteronomy 32 1-5

Listen, Heavens, I have something to tell you.

Attention, Earth, I’ve got a mouth full of words.

My teaching, let it fall like a gentle rain, my words arrive like morning dew,

Like a sprinkling rain on new grass, like spring showers on the garden.

For it’s God’s Name I’m preaching, respond to the greatness of our God!

His works are perfect, and the way he works is fair and just;

A God you can depend upon, no exceptions, a straight-arrow God.

6-7 Don’t you realize it is God you are treating like this?

This is crazy; don’t you have any sense of reverence?

Isn’t this your father who created you,

who made you and gave you a place on Earth?

Read up on what happened before you were born; dig into the past, understand your roots.

10-14 He found you out in the wilderness, in an empty, windswept wasteland.

He threw his arms around him, lavished attention on him, guarding him as the apple of his eye.

He was like an eagle hovering over its nest, overshadowing its young,

Then spreading its wings, lifting them into the air then teaching them to fly.

there is no getting away from or around me!

43 Celebrate, nations, join the praise of his people.

The Holy Spirit at the Birth of Jesus

Luke 1:35 (MSG)

The angel answered,

“The Holy Spirit will come upon you, the power of the Highest hover over you;

Therefore, the child you bring to birth will be called Holy, Son of God.”

The Holy Spirit at Jesus’ Baptism

The Holy Spirit like a Dove

Luke 3:21-22  (KJV)

21 Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,

22 And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.

The Holy Spirit at our Re-birth

John 3:4-8 (NIV)

Jesus Teaches Nicodemus

Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.”

“How can someone be born when they are old?”

Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!”

Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.  You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”

The Holy Spirit Guides US

John 16:13 (NLT)

When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future.

Acts 1The Message (MSG)

To the Ends of the World

As they met and ate meals together, he told them that they were on no account to leave Jerusalem but “must wait for what the Father promised: the promise you heard from me. John baptized in water; you will be baptized in the Holy Spirit. And soon.”

6 When they were together for the last time they asked, “Master, are you going to restore the kingdom to Israel now? Is this the time?”

7-8 He told them, “You don’t get to know the time. Timing is the Father’s business. What you’ll get is the Holy Spirit. And when the Holy Spirit comes on you, you will be able to be my witnesses in Jerusalem, all over Judea and Samaria, even to the ends of the world.”

9-11 These were his last words. As they watched, he was taken up and disappeared in a cloud. They stood there, staring into the empty sky. Suddenly two men appeared—in white robes! They said, “You Galileans!—why do you just stand here looking up at an empty sky? This very Jesus who was taken up from among you to heaven will come as certainly—and mysteriously—as he left.”
