THE HEART OF THE MATTER…

As I was directed to write the following, I realized that it’s contents might rub some of you the wrong way; but…don’t shoot the messenger!  If the shoe fits….  Well, you know the rest… anita

But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.1 Samuel 16:7

Have you ever heard someone at church pray with eloquence?  They hit on every subject with words that bring you into worship and thanksgiving….  words that make you want to repent of all the bad things you’ve done or thought, or said in the past week.  They talk about love and forgiveness, holiness and right standing with God….  You feel as if the presence of the Lord has come down and is standing there-in the midst of the congregation.   …But then you run into them during the week, and their demeanor and language are anything but holy.  They won’t forgive…and anger and rage spew forth from their mouth.

I guess my point is this…

God doesn’t care if your words are eloquent when you go before Him in prayer.  He doesn’t care if you stand, raise your hands, fall on your face, or kneel before Him.  He’s not looking at the stance or posture of your body…He’s looking at your heart!

The Bible says:  The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure.  Who can understand it? “I the Lord search the heart and examine the mind, to reward each person according to their conduct, according to what their deeds deserve.” -Jeremiah 17:9-10

Even the world knows it’s about forgiveness!  Look at the words Don Henley wrote in the song called, The Heart Of The Matter:
I’ve been trying to get down to the Heart of the Matter….  But I think it’s about forgiveness….  Forgiveness….  Even if… you don’t love me anymore.
****
See, Christ died for US while we were still sinners.  We didn’t love Him…but He loved us and decided to forgive us even if we didn’t love Him….  Even if we hadn’t asked Him for forgiveness.
God said, don’t bring your gift (your prayer) to the altar if you have unforgiveness in your heart towards someone.  He said, go to them and make it right…then come talk to me! (I’m paraphrasing.)
Your words don’t mean anything if your actions don’t match! God wants a humble heart…THAT is the highest form of prayer!
