AMOS: Justice and Righteousness

Amos

Amos 8:11 (NLT)

“The time is surely coming,” says the Sovereign Lord,

“when I will send a famine on the land—

not a famine of bread or water

but of hearing the words of the Lord.

Judah: Jereboam II

Military Victories lead to great wealth, wealth lead to apathy, apathy lead to idol worship, idol worship lead to injustice, injustice lead to abuse of the poor.

Amos 1 (NLT)

1 This message was given to Amos, a shepherd from the town of Tekoa in Judah. He received this message in visions two years before the earthquake, when Uzziah was king of Judah and Jeroboam II, the son of Jehoash, was king of Israel.

Amos 7:12

Then Amaziah said to Amos, “Get out, you seer! Go back to the land of Judah. Earn your bread there and do your prophesying there. 13 Don’t prophesy anymore at Bethel, because this is the king’s sanctuary and the temple of the kingdom.” 14 Amos answered Amaziah, “I was neither a prophet nor the son of a prophet, but I was a shepherd, and I also took care of sycamore-fig trees. 15 But the Lord took me from tending the flock and said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to my people Israel.’ 16 Now then, hear the word of the Lord.

Idolatry leads to injustice

Amos 2:4 This is what the Lord says:

“For three sins of Judah, even for four, I will not relent.

Because they have rejected the law of the Lord and have not kept his decrees,

because they have been led astray by false gods, the gods their ancestors followed,

5 I will send fire on Judah that will consume the fortresses of Jerusalem.”

Judgment on Israel

6 This is what the Lord says:

“For three sins of Israel, even for four, I will not relent.

They sell the innocent for silver, and the needy for a pair of sandals.

7 They trample on the heads of the poor as on the dust of the ground and deny justice to the oppressed.

Great Responsibility

Genesis 12:7 NIV

The LORD appeared to Abram and said, “To your offspring I will give this land.” So he built an altar there to the LORD, who had appeared to him.

Galatians 3:16

The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. Scripture does not say “and to seeds,” meaning many people, but “and to your seed,” meaning one person, who is Christ.

Amos 4:1

You Never Got Hungry for God

“Listen to this, you cows of Bashan grazing on the slopes of Samaria.

You women! Mean to the poor, cruel to the down-and-out!

Indolent and pampered, you demand of your husbands,

‘Bring us a tall, cool drink!’

4-5 “Come along to Bethel and sin!

And then to Gilgal and sin some more!

Bring your sacrifices for morning worship.

Every third day bring your tithe.

Burn pure sacrifices—thank offerings.

Speak up—announce freewill offerings!

That’s the sort of religious show you just love.”

5:21-24 “I can’t stand your religious meetings.

I’m fed up with your conferences and conventions.

I want nothing to do with your religion projects,

your pretentious slogans and goals.

I’m sick of your fund-raising schemes,

your public relations and image making.

I’ve had all I can take of your noisy ego-music.

When was the last time you sang to me?

Do you know what I want?

I want justice—oceans of it.

I want fairness—rivers of it.

That’s what I want. That’s all I want.

25-27 “Didn’t you, dear family of Israel, worship me faithfully for forty years in the wilderness, bringing the sacrifices and offerings I commanded? How is it you’ve stooped to dragging gimcrack statues of your so-called rulers around, hauling the cheap images of all your star-gods here and there? Since you like them so much, you can take them with you when I drive you into exile beyond Damascus.” God’s Message, God-of-the-Angel-Armies.

A TRUE LOVE OF GOD TRANSFORMS YOUR RELATIONSHIPS

Amos 5:24  NIV

But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream!

Spiritual Drought

Amos 8:11 (NLT)

“The time is surely coming,” says the Sovereign Lord,

“when I will send a famine on the land—

not a famine of bread or water but of hearing the words of the Lord.

SEEK THE LORD and SEEK GOOD
Amos 5:

6a Seek the Lord, and ye shall live;

14a Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live

Romans 12 (NLT)

12 And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. 2 Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

3 Because of the privilege and authority God has given me, I give each of you this warning: Don’t think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves by the faith God has given us…

6 In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well. So if God has given you the ability to prophesy, speak out with as much faith as God has given you. 7 If your gift is serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, teach well. 8 If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly.

9 Don’t just pretend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good. 10 Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other. 11 Never be lazy, but work hard and serve the Lord enthusiastically. 12 Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying. 13 When God’s people are in need, be ready to help them. Always be eager to practice hospitality.

14 Bless those who persecute you. Don’t curse them; pray that God will bless them. 15 Be happy with those who are happy, and weep with those who weep. 16 Live in harmony with each other. Don’t be too proud to enjoy the company of ordinary people. And don’t think you know it all!

17 Never pay back evil with more evil. Do things in such a way that everyone can see you are honorable. 18 Do all that you can to live in peace with everyone.

19 Dear friends, never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God.

21 Don’t let evil conquer you, but conquer evil by doing good.
