Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak. 25 When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man. -Genesis 32:24
This past Sunday, after the service, the ladies held their first summer meeting. It was a time of fellowship, great food, and a wonderful movie afterwards. The movie was about Intercession, and how prayer really does change things. It was called, The War Room.
As I sat and watched everyone in sweet fellowship, I had to wonder if Heaven would be like this. It was a Ladies Meeting, but some of the husbands joined in with us, as well as the children. Everyone was getting along, no fighting, no arguments…just peace and joy. Then there was the food. It was spectacular! The Bible talks about there being twelve kinds of fruit every month…we had a salad bar, and there was at least twenty kinds of everything to choose from! Good friends, good food, good fellowship…heaven on earth!
Then it was time for the movie. It talked about the importance of prayer. Not just a quick, rehearsed, one minute prayer…but an earnest time of spreading out our petitions to God, and not letting go until they are answered. In Genesis 32:24-30, this is what we read about one mans time with God:
Jacob Wrestles With God
24 Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak. 25 When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man. 26 Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.”
But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.”
27 The man asked him, “What is your name?”
“Jacob,” he answered.
28 Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel,[a] because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.”
29 Jacob said, “Please tell me your name.”
But he replied, “Why do you ask my name?” Then he blessed him there.
30 So Jacob called the place Peniel,[b] saying, “It is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared.
Sometimes, when we don’t get the answer we want, we give up. We need to be more like Jacob…wrestle with the things we need to see from God’s hand…not give up until we see them come to pass!
