The Amazing Church

I recently saw an article in the Huffington Post entitled, “My Emancipation from the American Christianity”. The main point of the article is this, “I am a Christian and an American, but I refuse to settle for this American Christianity any longer or be defined by it.”

Here is my response:

Which American Christianity are you so upset with? American Christianity is the most diverse group on planet earth. I just did gigs at four churches this week. One church was full of “rich” republicans, as you might class them. Another church was rather liberal and had a democratic senator in the choir. Another church had a Jewish, Israel born pastor and then there is our small gathering that is surrounded by legal pot shops in the inner city of Denver. There are also hundreds of Messianic Jewish churches, Ethiopian churches, black gospel churches, rich churches and poor churches throughout America.  Just in my city there are churches in Spanish, Arabic, Hebrew, Greek, Tagalog, Russian, Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese, Swahili, Hindi, Burmese, Nepali, Navajo and I suspect dozens of other churches in diverse languages. As a musician I have had the privilege to experience a rich variety of styles in many of these churches. There are churches that meet in comedy clubs, bars, and movie theaters. According to a recent CBS news report there is even a Bible study where they bring and smoke pot. There is a church in my city that has a band that plays really loud Led Zeppelin before and after the services. There are churches whose worship is based on traditions that go back many centuries and churches where people just show up in jeans, not knowing any traditions but loving Jesus. There are also churches that sing from ancient music manuscripts and sit on the floor. American Christianity is where I have seen (Messianic) Jews and (Messianic) Arabs sing and dance together. I have seen blacks and whites unite in prayer. I have seen the good the bad and the ugly in church, but to define the American church in small terms is to stick your head in the sand and assume that everyone who goes to church is a white, middle class conservative “sheeple”. The church in America is not that mega-structure you see on TV or that cheesy satire pastor in the white suit begging for you money. It is the single most diverse organization of human beings on this planet and it is growing all over the world in places like South America, China, Africa, India, Iran and even ISIS occupied nations. The church in America is building homeless shelters, women’s shelters, orphanages, schools and fresh water wells all over the planet. American Christianity is not perfect and it was never intended to be, but it is the most racially mixed, economically diverse and culturally varied organization on Earth. Interestingly, the Bible said that would happen. Check it out:

“For you were slaughtered, and your blood has ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation.   – Revelation 5:9b
