“Blessed are the poor in spirit: for their’s is the Kingdom of Heaven.” Matthew 5:3
We live in a world ruled by the rich and powerful. They have achieved the pinnacle of success, and have no need of anything…they think. But, Jesus illustrates the difference between the rich and the poor in spirit in Luke 18:10-14.
In the above mentioned passage, the Pharisee enters the Temple, and uses his prayer to praise himself. The publican, on the other hand, enters the Temple, and begs for mercy from the Lord, admitting his own need and inability to save himself.
The publican is a picture of the poor in spirit; those that realize they are poor and needy and must seek God and ask for His mercy to cleanse their sin. They realize…that is the only hope they have!
