The Three Crosses
Two criminals were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left. Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads Matt. 27: 38-39
insults = blasphemeo
In the same way the rebels who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him. Matt. 27:44 (TNIV)
Therefore I will give him a portion among the great, and he will divide the spoils with the strong, because he poured out his life unto death, Is. 53:12a (TNIV)
and was numbered with the transgressors. For he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. Is. 53:12b (TNIV)
The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him. They said, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.” Luke 23:35 (TNIV)
The soldiers also came up and mocked him. They offered him wine vinegar 37 and said, “If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.” Luke 23:36
There was a written notice above him, which read: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS. Luke 23:37
Take the Easy Way Out
One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!” Luke 23:39
The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”
Matt. 4:3 (TNIV)
And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. Heb. 11:6 (TNIV)
But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? Luke 23:40
We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.” Luke 23:41
Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom. Luke 23:42 (TNIV)
This Changes Everything
Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.” Luke 23:43 (TNIV)
Jesus + Nothing = Everything
The Priests Were Changed
Mark 14:61-65 (NIV)
But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer.
Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”
“I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”
The high priest tore his clothes. “Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked. “You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?”
They all condemned him as worthy of death. Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, “Prophesy!” And the guards took him and beat him.
So God’s message continued to spread. The number of believers greatly increased in Jerusalem, and many of the Jewish priests were converted, too.
Death is Defeated
1 Peter 3:18-20
“For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit;
So, what exactly does the Easter event mean?
- The resurrection of Jesus Christ means He is still alive and among us today.
Luke 24 (NLT)
24 But very early on Sunday morning the women went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. 2 They found that the stone had been rolled away from the entrance. 3 So they went in, but they didn’t find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 As they stood there puzzled, two men suddenly appeared to them, clothed in dazzling robes.
5 The women were terrified and bowed with their faces to the ground. Then the men asked, “Why are you looking among the dead for someone who is alive? 6 He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead! Remember what he told you back in Galilee, 7 that the Son of Man must be betrayed into the hands of sinful men and be crucified, and that he would rise again on the third day.”
8 Then they remembered that he had said this.
2 Timothy 1:10Living Bible (TLB)
10 And now he has made all of this plain to us by the coming of our Savior Jesus Christ, who broke the power of death and showed us the way of everlasting life through trusting him.
“I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me through their message. 21 I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one—as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me.
22 “I have given them the glory you gave me, so they may be one as we are one. 23 I am in them and you are in me. May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me and that you love them as much as you love me. 24 Father, I want these whom you have given me to be with me where I am. Then they can see all the glory you gave me because you loved me even before the world began!
- The resurrection of Jesus Christ means that everything He said, every promise He gave, every claim He made, is good, stamped with Heaven’s verification.
John 20 (NLT)
The Resurrection According to John
20 Early on Sunday morning, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and found that the stone had been rolled away from the entrance. 2 She ran and found Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved. She said, “They have taken the Lord’s body out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!”
3 Peter and the other disciple started out for the tomb. 4 They were both running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5 He stooped and looked in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he didn’t go in. 6 Then Simon Peter arrived and went inside. He also noticed the linen wrappings lying there, 7 while the cloth that had covered Jesus’ head was folded up and lying apart from the other wrappings. 8 Then the disciple who had reached the tomb first also went in, and he saw and believed— 9 for until then they still hadn’t understood the Scriptures that said Jesus must rise from the dead. 10 Then they went home.
- The resurrection of Jesus Christ means we may live boldly in this life, since death has been defeated.
Romans 8:18 ESV
For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.
2 Corinthians 3:12 (TLB)
Since we know that this new glory will never go away, we can preach with great boldness
John 10:10 (AMP)
The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance (to the full, till it overflows).
